Better World Organization, in coordination with the Directorate of Social Affairs and several school directors in Duhok, recently held a discussion meeting to review the results and officially close the “Enhancing Safe Environment in Vulnerable Families from Host Community in Duhok City” project, funded by SOS Kinderdörfer Weltweit. The project, which ran for four and a half years from 21 September 2021 to 30 July 2025, worked closely with families across multiple neighborhoods, including Sarhildan, Gijabara, Khabat, Malta, Hay Shorta, Etit, and Grebase.
Over the course of the initiative, the project reached more than 19,000 individuals, providing a comprehensive range of programs and services aimed at improving well-being, strengthening social support, and fostering community resilience. These services included social support and mental health care, educational programs, skills development and vocational activities, environmental initiatives, financial awareness and support, sports activities, and book and art clubs. The project also offered direct support to families affected by flooding, ensuring that vulnerable households received the assistance they needed during times of crisis.
Among the beneficiaries, the project supported 7,923 women, 4,799 girls, 3,926 men, and 3,266 boys, bringing the total number of people positively impacted to 19,268. In addition to individual services, the project achieved several key milestones in community engagement and outreach. A total of 1,726 families were registered to receive ongoing support, while 53 schools were visited to identify and refer beneficiaries for relevant programs. The initiative also informed 7,483 individuals about available service centers and coordinated with 28 community centers to expand the reach of activities and ensure accessibility for participants across neighborhoods.
The closure of this project marks a significant moment in Better World Organization’s ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable families and building safe, inclusive communities in Duhok. Through sustained collaboration with local authorities, schools, and community partners, the initiative has demonstrated the power of targeted social programs and community-centered approaches in creating meaningful and lasting impact.
