“Even in the toughest times, I believed that education could change my life, and now I want to help others believe the same.”

Breaking Barriers Through Determination
In the heart of Shekhan Camp, 22-year-old Hanifa is pursuing her dream of earning a degree in English Literature at the College of Humanities. Growing up in a remote village with limited educational opportunities, she taught herself Arabic through television programs, a small act that sparked a lifelong passion for learning.
Overcoming Displacement and Hardship
When displacement forced her family to move to Shekhan Camp, Hanifa’s education was interrupted for a year. Despite living in temporary shelters, she refused to give up. She transformed a tent into a study space and built a wooden desk to continue her studies, even while working in the fields during the summer to support her family.
A Turning Point: Training for Change
Hanifa’s life took a new direction when she joined a ten-day training organized by the Better World Organization for Community Development (BWOCD) and funded by KVINNA. Alongside 19 other women, she learned about awareness-raising, climate change, and effective communication. The program inspired her to use her new skills to support and empower her community.
Becoming a Community Leader
After the training, Hanifa began leading awareness sessions within the camp, sharing knowledge in both Arabic and Kurdish. Her confidence and commitment encouraged others to engage, learn, and take action.
Inspiring Change
Hanifa’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and education. Her story shows that with determination and opportunity; one person can make a lasting difference, turning personal challenges into community impact.
