Launching a New Initiative to Strengthen Women’s Leadership in Crisis Response

Under the supervision of the High Council of Women – Kurdistan Regional Government and in coordination with the Joint Crisis Coordination Center (JCC), Better World Organization held an important coordination meeting on Thursday, April 10, 2025, to discuss strategies for strengthening the role of women in crisis and disaster response mechanisms.

This meeting marked a significant milestone as Better World officially initiated its new project, “Increasing Young Women’s Participation and Leadership in Humanitarian and Crisis Planning and Response in Duhok Governorate,” with the generous support of UN Women (@unwomen). The gathering represented the first formal step toward implementing the project’s objectives and building strong institutional partnerships to ensure its success.

The discussion focused on enhancing women’s meaningful participation in crisis management structures and decision-making processes. Participants explored practical approaches to increasing the number of trained voluntary response teams and ensuring that young women are actively involved in preparedness, planning, and emergency response efforts. Emphasis was placed on strengthening women’s resilience, leadership skills, and technical capacities to enable them to contribute effectively during times of crisis.

Key points were also addressed within the framework of the National Action Plan for UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) on Women, Peace, and Security. The meeting highlighted the importance of inclusive crisis response strategies that recognize women not only as beneficiaries but as leaders and agents of change. Participants underscored the need for coordinated efforts among institutions, civil society organizations, and humanitarian actors to ensure gender-responsive and community-centered approaches to disaster management.

Through this initiative, Better World Organization reaffirms its commitment to advancing women’s leadership, promoting gender equality in humanitarian action, and contributing to stronger, more inclusive crisis response systems in Duhok Governorate.
