Background:

Better World Organization for Community Development is a humanitarian and non-governmental organization established on 24th May 2017 in Kurdistan/Iraq. Independent and non-profit that works to advocate for peace and coexistence in the community and improve the social, psychosocial, and economic situation of people. The organization focuses on women through projects that ensure protection and empowerment for them.

Under the direct supervision of the (Project Manager), the (Lawyer) will perform the following duties and responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Work within the Better World Organization Code of Conduct, HR Policy, and full compliance with Safeguarding, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, Anti-Fraud and any other relevant policies of the organization. Policy documents will be provided on the Orientation Day.
2. Provide legal consultations and representation to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) survivors, ensuring their rights and interests are protected.
3. Handle GBV-related cases with professionalism, preparing necessary documentation and advocating effectively in legal proceedings.
4. Conduct awareness-raising sessions on women’s rights, gender equality, and laws protecting women to educate communities.
5. Collaborate with law enforcement, judiciary bodies, and other stakeholders to ensure Stay updated on legal frameworks and policies related to GBV and women’s rights to provide accurate advice and representation.
6. Maintain detailed records of legal cases and consultations while ensuring strict confidentiality and ethical standards.
7. Contribute to organizational advocacy efforts by providing legal expertise to initiatives promoting gender equality and survivor protection.
8. Perform other tasks requested by Line manager.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Law with a valid license to practice law.
• At least 2 years of experience in providing legal consultations and representation, preferably in cases related to GBV or women’s rights.
• Fluency in Arabic for effective communication with cases and basic proficiency in English for documentation and reporting.
• Strong understanding of legal frameworks, including local, national, and international laws related to GBV, women’s rights, and gender equality.
• Strong advocacy and negotiation skills to represent clients effectively in legal proceedings.
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups and vulnerable populations with sensitivity and professionalism.
• Commitment to ethical practice, confidentiality, and the safeguarding of clients.
• Familiarity with referral systems and the ability to connect cases to other services as needed.
• Commitment to organizational policies, including safeguarding, anti-fraud, and prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse.
